Job Description

NetImpact Strategies is seeking a Senior Scientific Computing Engineer to lead the design and optimization of the scientific computing infrastructure supporting a Federal Healthcare Agency. This role involves high-level decision-making and strategy development for deploying integrated systems that support complex research activities, requiring extensive experience with HPC environments and advanced technologies. 

This role is onsite in Bethesda, MD. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Provide specialized support for a range of scientific software tools including BioRender, BioSig, SQANTI, cDNA_Cupcake, Longbow, SMRTLink tool suite, Graphpad, Imaris, Dragonfly 3D, DNAStar Lasergene, MATLAB, SnapGene, and Python-based Anaconda environments, ensuring necessary packages are maintained across both Python 2 and 3. 
  • Utilize expert knowledge in systems administration across platforms such as RedHat, CentOS, and Scientific Linux, and proficiently manage software including Perl, Python, shell scripts, Sun Grid Engine, Apache, VMware ESX, and various database technologies like Microsoft SQL, MySQL, Oracle. Also manage network storage and data protection solutions including CFEngine, Scylde, Coraid, Isilon, Dell EMC Data Domain, and NexSAN. 
  • Exhibit advanced Linux system administration skills, specializing in solution engineering and troubleshooting within a scientific computing environment. 
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with the scientific community to align technology solutions with research needs. 
  • Lead and execute complex scientific computing projects, ensuring rigorous standards and project objectives are met. 
  • Manage and streamline the data transfer processes from specialized scientific equipment like microscopes to high-performance computing systems and enterprise storage solutions. 
  • Design and implement solutions for integrating non-networked scientific instruments with networked storage systems, develop remote access capabilities for microscopes, and create management dashboards for monitoring clinical trials. Also, coordinate with external academic institutions to develop clinical dashboards. 
  • Ensure the security of scientific computing devices, devise strategies for managing systems that cannot be regularly updated, and work with vendors to implement necessary patches and compensating controls for clinical and scientific equipment. 
  • Assess, recommend, and implement both software and hardware solutions that meet the operational needs of clinical and scientific environments, focusing on optimizing performance and compliance with scientific protocols. This includes evaluating Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) options and custom solutions tailored to specific research requirements. 
  • Lead the administration and strategic enhancement of HPC clusters, Linux servers, storage solutions, and relational databases. 
  • Direct the installation, optimization, and maintenance of complex scientific and enterprise software environments. 
  • Design and oversee the integration of technical, IT, and organizational components into cohesive systems to support scientific research. 
  • Provide expert troubleshooting and technical guidance to resolve high-level system and software issues. 
  • Collaborate with research teams to understand their technical requirements and develop solutions that significantly enhance their computational capabilities. 
  • Mentor junior engineers and ensure best practices in systems administration and software deployment. 

Qualifications

Required

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience. 
  • Extensive experience with system administration in HPC environments and advanced knowledge of Linux systems. 
  • Expertise in a broad range of technologies including VMware, SQL databases, and scientific computing applications. 
  • Demonstrated leadership in managing large-scale IT projects and teams. 
  • Exceptional communication skills, strategic thinking, and a proven track record in innovative solutions engineering. 

 

Preferred

  • Previous Federal Consulting Experience
